Scanning for Stability

Scanning for Stability

When scanning our clients' sites using Google's PageSpeed Insights tool, we often receive a rank of lower than 20 on mobile and well below 70 on desktop. These scores, which are rated out of a maximum score of 100, are indicative of the current health of a website. Due to the ever-evolving nature of the internet, a WordPress website's health degrades over time as web standards change and plugins are updated to fit them. Google provides lists of specific areas that need to be improved to raise this rank, which is where we start with repairing the health of a site. In general, a website that's in good health will have a score of around 50 on mobile devices and 80+ on desktop. Our goal is to not only reach these scores, but surpass them, providing a better browsing experience for our clients and their visitors, as well as improving Google listing ranks.

Receiving a Letter Grade

Areas of Expertise

Additional Statistics

In addition to scanning with PageSpeed Insights, we utilize a website scanning tool called GTmetrix. This tool gives a letter grade for websites in addition to numeric scores for different important aspects of it. Typically, the first scan we run on a client's site will have a letter grade of E with a performance score under 60% and a structure score under 70%. These scores can be drastically improved through various optimizations on a site, from JavaScript deferment and async loading to image compression and gzip delivery, and we utilize these methods and more to try and achieve an A grade. This tool shows various areas where improvement can be made, very much like PageSpeed Insights.

Summary

Summary

To demonstrate these optimizations, we would like to showcase a website that required extensive work to reach an acceptable speed. Banixx, a company that relies heavily on web traffic for their sales, was struggling with slow page speeds and long loading times. After scanning their site, we discovered a number of issues on both desktop and mobile devices. After optimizing their site, we were able to produce results that truly speak for themselves. As you can see from the examples above, we were able to raise both their desktop and mobile scores to well above our recommended minimum. In addition to these examples, we were able to make a vast improvement in their GTmetrix scores.
